Dynamic Traffic Light Signal

 

A dynamic traffic light signal system manages the dynamic real-time timing of signal phases at traffic signals. It tries to find the best phasing (i.e. cycle times, phase splits and offsets) for the current traffic situation.

 

The system uses sensors at each traffic signal to detect vehicle presence in each lane and pedestrians waiting to cross at the local site.

 

In Hong Kong, such system is currently adopted in the area traffic control systems at Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, Tsuen Wan and Shatin. Existing and future coverage of area traffic control system is shown below in the image.
